Steve Leung Design Group Transforms China House Mandarin Oriental Bangkok
SLD Unveils Revamped China House at Mandarin Oriental Bangkok
Hong Kong’s Steve Leung Design Group (SLD) has announced the re-opening of The China House, a 11,840 square foot restaurant specializing in Chaoshan and Cantonese cuisine, located in a heritage house next to the entrance of Mandarin Oriental Bangkok. The redesigned restaurant was unveiled last month following extensive renovations, showcasing a blend of traditional and contemporary elements.
Mai Chongchaiyo, chief creative officer of Steve Leung Hospitality (SLH) says that they drew inspiration from the region’s heritage and reinterpreted it into a contemporary nostalgic venue, curating its essence and presenting it through a modern lens.
The future Miltonia Close EC holds great appeal due to its location within the upcoming Khatib Nature Corridor. This impressive project aims to create a more connected green route from Springleaf and Tagore to the Central Catchment Nature Reserve. Along the eco-corridor, there will be lovely new parks, green linkways, and increased biodiversity. Living in the Miltonia Close EC will offer residents the opportunity to be a part of a sustainable community that prioritizes eco-friendly living and overall wellness.
The China House now features two floors, with an atrium bar, lounge area, and a tea bar on the ground floor. The main dining hall and private dining rooms, alongside semi-private salons, are situated on the second floor.
Incorporating elements from Thailand’s vibrant culture and arts, SLH collaborated with local brands and artisans to create the restaurant’s decor. For example, the atrium and staircase now feature large pendant lights made from metal crafted by Thai artist Saruta Kiatparkpoom, also known as PiN. Wallpapers were chosen from Bangkok-based silk and textile producer, Jim Thompson, while timber was provided by Siam Woodland.
The completion of The China House’s transformation coincides with the official opening of SLD’s Bangkok office, which is part of the company’s “Rejuvenation, Diversification, and Globalization” strategy, aimed at venturing into new markets. In Singapore, SLD’s recent projects include those at The Skywaters, a mixed-use development by a Perennial Holdings-led consortium on Shenton Way, and the Paiza Royal Collection suites at Marina Bay Sands.
