Yeong Sien Seu, chief legal and sustainability officer of UOL Group, and Lee Zhi Xiang, senior project manager of Singapore Land Group, received the Top Development award for The Watergardens at Canberra from Pang Kai Xin, vice president of corporate for EdgeProp Singapore. The award was presented at a ceremony graced by distinguished guests and industry professionals. Developed by United Venture Development, a joint venture between UOL Group, Singapore Land Group, and Kheng Leong Company, the 448-unit development stands proudly on a 296,719 sq ft site along Canberra Drive. The developers secured the 99-year leasehold plot through a Government Land Sale tender in March 2020 for $270.2 million, translating to approximately $650 psf per plot ratio.
Another recognition received by The Watergardens at Canberra was the Design Excellence award, which was presented to Chan Jer Wei, deputy general manager of UOL Group, by Lim Koon Park, founder and principal architect of Park + Associates. This award was particularly commendable, as the development’s unique topography presented various challenges to the architects appointed by the developers, P&T Consultants. However, they were able to seamlessly integrate the architecture, landscape, and surroundings to create a serene environment that beautifully connects water, greenery, and design.
Comprising sixteen five-storey blocks, The Watergardens boasts an array of units ranging from two- to four-bedrooms, with sizes starting from 646 sq ft to 1,528 sq ft. The development was fully sold in under two years after its launch in 2021, with the average price per square foot at $1,446. This exceptional response is a testament to the appeal of the development and its success in meeting the needs of different buyers.
Nestled in the relatively new Canberra estate in District 27, The Watergardens enjoys a prime location between Sembawang and Yishun in the northeast of Singapore. Conveniently situated along Canberra Drive, the development is surrounded by landed residential enclaves and HDB blocks, with the nearby Canberra MRT Station providing easy access to other parts of the island. It is also close to various amenities, including malls such as Canberra Plaza, Northpoint City, and Sun Plaza, as well as recreational facilities like Sembawang Hot Spring Park and Sembawang Park. Residents with young children also benefit from the publicly accessible childcare facility at The Watergardens.
The Watergardens at Canberra offers a resort-style living experience, with its site featuring an irregular shape and sloping terrain. P&T Consultants cleverly embraced the topography by placing the blocks at different levels, which, in turn, create tiered pools and layered gardens. This design results in a serene environment that effortlessly connects water, greenery, and architecture. In addition, the residential blocks boast a clean and modern design, with darker tones on the first floor and lighter tones on the upper storeys, creating a floating effect. The sun-shading structures and grey-tinted laminated glass also provide heat protection for residents. Moreover, the blocks are oriented to maximize natural wind flow, and each unit has a generous balcony that further promotes ventilation. The pools and facilities are nestled within lush landscaping, creating a tranquil and resort-like atmosphere.
Designed by STX Landscape Architects, The Watergardens is divided into three distinct landscaped zones: the Forest Pool zone, the 50m lap pool zone, and the recreation lawn area. The Forest Pool zone boasts a cluster of recreational pools, including a water jet terrace, water slides, an aqua gym, a function space, and entertainment rooms. The 50m lap pool offers a jacuzzi alcove and a cabana deck, flanked by a gym on one end and two function rooms on the other. Meanwhile, the recreation lawn area offers an open green space adorned with flower gardens, along with a grill pavilion and water hammocks. Additional amenities across the development include an outdoor chess garden, an urban farm area, a reflexology trail, a jogging trail, multiple dining pavilions, and a yoga lawn. The various spaces are connected by scenic pathways adorned with diverse plantings, reinforcing the resort-style atmosphere.
The residences at The Watergardens accommodate a wide range of needs and lifestyles, with various configurations and sizes available. For instance, two-bedrooms units ranging from 678 sq ft are perfect for smaller households, while the two-bedroom premium units starting from 721 sq ft and two-bedroom premium plus study units starting from 797 sq ft cater to those in need of slightly more space. Similarly, three-bedroom units starting from 904 sq ft come in three-bedroom-plus-study layouts from 1,012 sq ft and three-bedroom premium plus study layouts from 1,109 sq ft. The larger four-bedroom units even include a utility room. Thoughtful features are integrated into the units, with two-bedroom premium units and above featuring double-volume living and dining areas on the fifth floor, and two-bedroom premium plus study units and above having fully enclosed kitchens. Four-bedroom units also include a utility room.
Index Design conceptualized the interiors, which boast impeccable attention to detail and cater to various buyer profiles. Two-bedroom units feature a cool color palette, creating a calm and inviting atmosphere, while larger units adopt warm and welcoming tones suited for family living. The main living areas boast marble-effect flooring, while the bedrooms feature timber-like finishes. The master bathrooms also include elegant curved mirror features, adding a touch of sophistication.
In light of its harmonious integration of landscape, architecture, and interiors, The Watergardens at Canberra perfectly captures the essence of resort-style living within a contemporary urban setting. This design vision has rightfully earned it accolades at the EPEA 2025, cementing its status as a premier property.
